Community pharmacists now have access to patient health information through one of two clinical viewers: ConnectingOntario and ClinicalConnect®.
Clinical viewers help pharmacists make faster, more informed decisions at the point of care and reduce medication-related harms.
Clinical viewers can provide pharmacists with:
- Medication histories related to publicly funded dispensed drugs, publicly funded pharmacy services, and dispensed monitored drugs
- Laboratory test orders and results, including COVID-19 test results
- Diagnostic imaging results
- Discharge summaries and other reports from acute care hospitals across the province
Accessing clinical viewers can help inform clinical decision-making, reduce medication errors, facilitate transitions in care, and support your documentation – all of which improve patient outcomes and safety.
Upon applying for access to a clinical viewer, you will be connected to an onboarding lead who will help guide you through the steps and answer any questions along the way.
ClinicalConnect® is operated by Hamilton Health Sciences while ConnectingOntario ClinicalViewer is operated by Ontario Health; therefore, the end-user requirements, terms, and conditions differ between the two. Data from the Electronic Health Record (EHR) is available in both clinical viewers.
ConnectingOntario
For more information on how you can use ConnectingOntario ClinicalViewer, watch this brief demo and visit Clinical Viewers for Community Pharmacies.
When you begin the onboarding process, you will be assigned to an Ontario Health lead. They will walk you through the steps and you can set up a call with them at any time to ask questions.
If you have any questions about the onboarding process, please email [email protected] and an onboarding specialist will contact you.
Agreements
To access the ConnectingOntario ClinicalViewer, an agreement package must be signed by the Legally Responsible Person (LRP) for the pharmacy. The LRP is the person with the authority to sign legally binding documents on behalf of the organization. This must be a Director of the pharmacy.
A Legal Agreements Guide is available for your reference.
Privacy
Every pharmacy entering into an agreement with ConnectingOntario must appoint a Privacy Officer (PO). The Privacy Officer is responsible for ensuring your organization is in compliance with ConnectingOntario’s privacy requirements.
The Privacy Officer Role and Responsibilities document outlines what your organization is responsible for. Your named Privacy Officer must review this document.
The appointed Privacy Officer must ensure the requirements laid out in the EHR Health Care Provider Guide are met before your pharmacy can go live with the clinical viewer.
Access ONE ID ® Credentials
Pharmacists accessing ConnectingOntario ClinicalViewer are required to obtain Personal ONE® ID credentials (username and password). Existing Personal ONE ID credentials can be used.
Once the onboarding requirements for your pharmacy are completed, the Designated Manager (DM) will be enrolled as a ONE® ID Express Registration Agent (ERA). This role allows a DM to send ONE® ID registration invitations to their staff and enroll them with access to ConnectingOntario at their pharmacy site.
A pharmacist can be enrolled with access to ConnectingOntario under the authority of more than one pharmacy using a single ONE® ID account; however, an individual’s ONE® ID credentials do not grant access to clinical viewers at every pharmacy.
The following documents are available to Designated Managers (DM) to understand their role as ONE® ID ERAs.
- Express Registration Agent Procedures Guide
- ONE® ID Express Registration Invitation Management
- ONE ID Express Self-Registration Guide
To revoke access to ConnectingOntario – for example, during staff turnover – DMs would need to contact the Ontario Health ONE® ID team at [email protected] with this request.
Training
Everyone at your organization is required to complete training before accessing the ConnectingOntario ClinicalViewer.
- The Privacy & Security Training for Health Care Providers (approximately 40 mins) and the Module 2: Medication Portlet Training (approximately 15 mins) are mandatory.
- The ConnectingOntario ClinicalViewer Overview eLearning Module is strongly recommended and takes 10 minutes.
Your organization is required to maintain records of completed mandatory training and provide these records in case of an audit. The Privacy and Security Training test at the end of the module must be completed on an annual basis by all users at your organization.
The onboarding process can take from 3 to 5 weeks. If all requirements are met and no technical issues arise, you can go live with the clinical viewer 3 to 5 days after technical setup is complete.
ClinicalConnect®
For a detailed overview of how to use the ClinicalConnect® clinical viewer, see the Quick Tips.

If you have any questions about the onboarding process, please email [email protected] and an onboarding specialist will contact you.
Agreements
At the start of the onboarding process, the Legal Signing Authority (LSA) reviews the ClinicalConnect® Terms & Conditions and electronically submits a Participation Agreement. This individual must be a Director of the pharmacy who can be validated against the OCP website.
Privacy Contract
When the Participation Agreement is accepted, an onboarding specialist will reach out to the identified Privacy Contact (named in the Participation Agreement) to do the following:
- Support completion of the required privacy pre-assessment and Ontario Health client information forms (information will be pre-populated where possible)
- Outline and clarify insurance requirements
- Provide a sample privacy notice (a written public statement that provides a general description of your pharmacy’s information practices, such as security of personal health information) for quick implementation and adoption
- Address any identified gaps in the privacy and security attestation – the 32 requirements that must be in place in your pharmacy to qualify for ClinicalConnect®, most of which are PHIPA requirements
- Sample policy guides may be provided by ClinicalConnect® for reference and use
The Privacy Contact will be required to complete an orientation, made up of two e-learning modules that take around 70 minutes to complete.
Access ONE ID ® Credentials
Pharmacists accessing ClinicalConnect® will require a personal ONE® ID account. Once the onboarding requirements have been met and the pharmacy has been approved, pharmacies that are granting access to 10 users or fewer will be issued a template to distribute that will allow these users to directly book an appointment with Ontario Health to obtain a ONE® ID account.
For pharmacies with 11 or more users, the LSA (legal signing authority) will work with the ClinicalConnect® onboarding specialist to nominate a ONE® ID Local Registration Authority (LRA).
LRAs are responsible for the providing user accounts to staff pharmacists, as well as any ongoing management, and will be required to complete a two-part orientation.
Training
A Resource Centre for End Users is available for training. It includes a Learning Pathway e-module for brand new ClinicalConnect® users, as well as training resources specific to pharmacy:
- Pharmacy: Home Med Drugs/Services – Data from Digital Health Drug Repository
- Viewing COVID-19 Vaccination Information
- Pharmacy: Home Med Drugs/Services – Consent Directive
- Pharmacy: Home Med Drugs/Services – New DHDR Reports
- Pharmacy: Hospital Medications View
A comprehensive user guide is also available.
