About the time Starkwather opened his pharmacy, in Great Britain, George III, who had reigned since 1760, died in 1820 and was succeeded by his son, George IV; the latter had served as Regent from 1811, and then reigned until 1830. At his death, his brother, William IV, ascended the throne. James Monroe was the fifth president of the United States. Napoleon Bonaparte, onetime emperor of France and ruler of much of Europe, died in 1821 on the Island of St. Helena, where he had been exiled since 1815.
