The British introduced the use of tetanus antitoxin for all wounded soldiers in 1915 during World War I (1914-18); modern plastic surgery began to develop in Britain; vitamins D & E were discovered along with recognition that D promoted bone growth and combated rickets; the first female hormones were isolated; the first birth control clinic was established in Britain; and in Canada, Banting and Best discovered insulin to treat diabetes; the influenza pandemic of 1918-19 killed 15 million people; the British established a Ministry of Health in 1919. Major changes were made in Canada in 1919 to the Proprietary and Patent Medicine Act passed in 1908.
